HJIA Smoking Zone
Design
Overview
In order to solve the problem of second hand smoke exposure at the north terminal of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, and to provide an improved user experience for both smokers and non-smokers, we start from doing research to understand users’ journey and pain points, and then generate different solutions for ideation. Inspired by the sustainable philosophy of ATL-NEXT Airport program, we suggest to re-build the layout of the smoking areas to avoid the ambiguity of the space boundaries, and re-design new information system to convey the value of smoking friendly and breathe easy. Newly designed artifacts equipped in the smoking zones offer a more private, comfortable and convenient experience for smokers, also provide stakeholders with efficiency.
Problem Identify.
Research.
Field Study.
In the department of ATL Airport customer service, there are hundreds of complaints about the second-hand smoke exposure at the entrance of terminal. We identified the problem of ambiguity within smoking zone and non-smoking zone that caused the smokers to "invade" the secure area of non-smokers, by communication with the staff in the airport, massive observation, interview and investigation. We also reviewed scientific researches of second-hand smoke effects to support our design specifications. Specific design opportunities have been recognized after the preliminary field study for the case.
Expectation.
Ideation.
Inspiration.
Analyzing plenty of data and information from the research results, we proposed a clear goal of the expected smoking environment and had rounds of ideations and brainstormings to gather the relative solutions together. The ATL-NEXT program inspired us with sustainable and friendly philosophy of the innovation for smoking zone, thus helped us set up the specific design criteria of specifications, color palette, design language and core values, etc.
Solution.
Design Features.
Elements.
The final solution has been generated by considering many aspects of the smokers and non-smokers behaviors, environment, measurements, interactions and experiences. New smoking zones are supposed to moved to the two end sides of the terminal following scientific secure distance of second-hand smoke effects. Within the new zones, there are multifunctional artifacts for smokers to interact with based on their behaviors and activities (such as ashtray for cigarette butts, seats for relaxing and chatting, and plants for eco-friendly environments, etc. ). Information Display for guiding smokers to the designated smoking zones are improved with the concept of sustainability.
